Princess - Reviewed by Zazone.com

Now here`s an album I`ve been looking forward to for the past year! And I can gladly announce that Jo Day does not disappoint!

After taking a year off and starving fans of live performances, Jo Day marks her comeback with a new album: `Princess`. This rock bitch is no princess, but she easily rules rock with this album.

Listening to Jo Day's albums, the progression is clear and definite. Stronger and still heavy, Jo Day is pure rock energy!

`Going Down` has some seriously pounding bass with Jo`s voice driving the song over some eastern style backing.

`Suffer In Silence` is a winner - strong and powerful.

The track `Princess` has bolted up charts all over SA and once again shows Jo`s vocal talents. Very clever lyrics too. The `blah-blah-blah` is seriously addictive and you`ll find yourself `blah-blah`ing along very quickly!

`Save Yourself` - grinding guitars and the transition between almost whispered vocals to shouts and layered `Jo Day` vocals make this song an excellent album track - I expect that the live version would differ quite a bit, but could deliver some serious kick!

`Twilight Zone` is good and continues the grinding guitar feeling of `Save Yourself`, but somehow does not capture me ask much as the other tracks on the album.

`Slave To That` is an ever-so-slightly slower track with an almost laboured feel to it - as if the music is being drawn to it, slowly becoming a slave itself... The music simply matches the lyrics.

`Three Steps` opens slightly lighter and the vocals and underlying riffs reminds me of the 80`s Journey material. Very good stuff!

The simple yet thought provoking lyrics in `Judgement Day` are what makes this song of intense.

`Happy Birthday`. Now here`s a song to make you think. At first I thought it was a light-hearted happy birthday track (I was not listening properly and only heard bits and pieces.) The second time I heard it, I listened to the lyrics more carefully and was gobsmacked... like being hit by a brick wall... what a powerful message - excellent delivery and excellent package! And so relevant to today`s life! I love this track.

The lyrics of `Sixteen` seem to sway to and fro in the chorus, and the rest of the song is full and strong, with great guitar work.

What would you expect from a Jo Day track called `Bitch`? Mmm... full bass, aggressive lyrics that you can sing/scream/shout/jump around to? That`s exactly what you`ll get, plus really good guitar work and excellent riffs. I can easily see this song becoming an anthem for girls.

`Last Chance` is slightly different from the `usual` Jo Day and has Jo flexing her vocal muscles in a different way during the execution of her task - she however manages to come through with flying colours! It`s slow compared to `regular` Jo Day, but still an outstanding track.

There`s a solid hint of classic rock riffs on this album, yet it`s full of fresh sounds and feeling, and new, powerful lyrics. The album cover art is fantastic too, but the huge drawcard is the music. Jo Day is always more than the lyrics, guitar riffs, bass lines or drum beats - it`s an entire package!

This album, and it`s success on the charts already, proves Jo Day`s status as the ultimate female rock vocalist in South Africa, and firmly places her at number one in my Rock Hall of Fame.

Princess: phew, what a fantastic album! A true collector's item!
